Central Park School Guide

Colorado is an open enrollment state, which means students may choose to attend a neighborhood school or apply to other public schools, including charters, in or even outside their home enrollment area or district. Families “choice” into a school by ranking their preferred schools on the Denver Public Schools SchoolChoice application.

DPS SchoolChoice period for the 2024-25 school year starts Jan. 11 and runs until Feb. 12.

Central Park students are guaranteed a seat in a school within the Central Park enrollment zone. Students who do not submit a SchoolChoice application will be assigned to a school within their enrollment zone. For more on how and when to enroll, visit How Does School Choice Work?

Ashley Elementary

A member of the Luminary Learning Network (LLN) innovation zone, Ashley Elementary School (ECE to grade 5) is “diverse by design” and aims to provide unique and dynamic learning experiences for all students.

As the sole Title 1 (Small TNLI, Transitional Native Language Instruction) neighborhood DPS school between the Colfax Avenue Corridor and Central Park, Ashley is working to reach tangible academic and social-emotional goals, especially for students who have been historically underserved, with the support of like-minded schools in the LLN.

Ashley's literacy curriculum is grounded in the American Reading Company’s Research Labs. These inquiry based units, in both English and Spanish (four at each grade level across the year), engage students through extensive reading, writing, research and critical analysis. Students develop agency and expertise in a wide variety of disciplines, preparing them to lead in an ever-changing world.

The school uses the top-rated math curriculum, EngageNY, based on a set of common, internationally-benchmarked academic standards in mathematics. Known as the Common Core State Standards, they help all children learn the same skills. They create clear expectations for what a student should know and be able to do in key areas of mathematics.

Ashley Elephants prioritize hands-on learning, social-emotional awareness and what they call their “elephant HERD” qualities: Honesty, Empathy, Responsibility and Determination. Teachers emphasize the knowledge and skills necessary to become a contributing citizen in a diverse society.

Bill Roberts

Since its founding in 2005, William “Bill” Roberts (K to grade 8) has emphasized innovative learning opportunities through exploring the arts, educating for character and fostering vigorous thinking. The only K-8 elementary school in Central Park, Bill Roberts was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2021 by the U.S. Department of Education as an “Exemplary High Performing School.”

Bill Roberts has crafted a highly-regarded Gifted and Talented program. Two full-time teachers provide specific GT instruction and support to identified and high-achieving students. Both support classroom teachers with planning, providing resources and pushing into the classroom to offer differentiated instruction.

GT students receive services through a variety of methods, including: pull-out cluster grouping with a GT teacher, above-grade level content, curriculum enrichment, critical thinking techniques, independent studies and in-depth classroom/small group discussions.

Bill Roberts’ growing DEI committee hosts annual family events and restorative practices inform classroom behavior.

Technology is woven into the curriculum, with students regularly using Chromebooks in the classroom. The Bill Roberts Bobcats participate in pre-high school sports such as flag football, cross country, volleyball, baseball and soccer. Eighth graders must complete volunteer hours to matriculate, and a social-emotional curriculum is taught in all grades.

Denver Green School Northfield

Denver Green School Northfield (grades 6 to 8) provides an engaging learning experience centered around real-world issues. Holistic learning through experience and reflection is paramount, and the innovation school’s excursion program helps create meaningful learning opportunities in sustainable environments.

DGS-N works to be sure that Gifted and Talented students receive appropriate differentiated instruction to address individual needs. The school believes students in the GT program must have a broad base representation of students from different ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.

DGS-N core values include diversity, innovation, integrity and equity, and its mission is to teach students the skills they need to become responsible, respectful citizens in a diverse community.

One of eight schools in the DSST Denver-Aurora network, DSST Conservatory Green High School (grades 9 to 12) is a public charter school and a leader among open-enrollment STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) schools in the nation.

Located adjacent to Northfield High School on the Paul Sandoval Campus, DSST Conservatory Green HS focuses on lifelong skills and college preparation, with an emphasis on liberal arts learning (reading, writing, math and science).

Inspire Elementary

Inspire Elementary (ECE to grade 5) is an innovation school that follows a whole child education model that celebrates Inspire’s three values: Innovate, Impact and Inspire.

Aiming to leverage the passions, talents and learning styles of each student in a nurturing environment, Inspire balances academic rigor with “growing good citizens.”

To “Innovate," Inspire educators empower students to learn in a play-based environment, and children are encouraged to create meaningful solutions. Inspire’s value of “Impact” is cultivated by connecting classroom success with local, community and global problem-solving. As for the value of “Inspire,” Inspire Foxes are taught to think critically, engage collaboratively and develop responsibility and resilience via a growth mindset.

Inspire supports Gifted and Talented learners in a variety of ways. These include push-in and pull-out small group instruction when possible, flexible grouping in the classroom and cluster grouping based on strength.

The school also provides higher-order questioning with depth and complexity, independent investigations, advanced use of technology and creative critical thinking opportunities as strategies for appropriate differentiation.

Students with a GT identification receive an Advanced Learning Plan with specific goals related to academic and affective needs.

What is special about your school? We are a school that emphasizes the whole child approach, focusing on the comprehensive development of students, considering not only their academic achievements but also their social, emotional, and physical well-being.

This approach recognizes that education goes beyond traditional subjects and aims to nurture students holistically. All adults in our building, regardless of the position, care deeply for children and support their growth and development.

Our social emotional support includes conflict management tools that help students with language, Morning Meeting, Zones of Regulation, and counselor lessons. There are many ways for parents to engage with the school such as Celebration of Learning, Family Conferences or join the Parent Teacher Organization or Collaborative School Committee.

Isabella Bird Community School

Isabella Bird Community School is an innovation school serving ECE-5th grade that provides rigorous academics with a whole child approach.

Affectionately known as Izzi B, the school uses social and emotional learning as a lever for creating a caring community where students feel respected and valued in their individual interests, social identities, cultural values and backgrounds.

Inquiry-driven instruction is based on real-world,  compelling content. IBCS delivers content and instruction that aligns with grade levels.

The school community strives to raise the bar for all students and excellence through critical thinking. These values are aligned to an inclusive, fulltime GT programming model called clustering. Additionally, students learning English are offered co-teaching and small group instruction.

The clustering model integrates gifted learners into mixed-ability classrooms and provides appropriate differentiation. IBCS is committed to addressing the ongoing disproportionality in gifted education by offering equitable GT programming for  underserved populations.

The entire staff is training to obtain DPS internal certification in gifted and talented. The school maintains a full-time GT teacher who builds the capacity of classroom teachers through co-planning and coaching.

McAuliffe International School

McAuliffe International School (grades 6 to 8) is a global-minded, diverse middle school that seeks to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people through the efforts of students, teachers, parents and the community. A former International Baccalaureate (IB) school, it continues to follow many of the IB principles.

As a member of the Northeast Denver Innovation Zone, McAuliffe enjoys more freedom to innovate and reform. McAuliffe is a high-performing middle school that prepares students for success in high school, college and life with rigorous academics and a commitment to analytical research in the classroom.

McAuliffe offers students a well-rounded liberal arts education that emphasizes character education and international-mindedness. All McAuliffe students take full year courses in mathematics, language arts, social studies, science, engineering/design/technology, world languages (Spanish, French and Mandarin), the arts (visual arts, drama, band, orchestra, choir or journalism) and physical health education.

Since a large percentage of McAuliffe students have been identified as Gifted and Talented, the school does not us a traditional pull-out or push-in model. Instead, each student's Advanced Learning Plan, or ALP, informs classroom teachers of student strengths so that teachers can differentiate through in-class flexible grouping, content extensions or other classroom strategies. (Extensions are further activities around the aims of a class but occur after it, often as homework. Extension tasks can provide more, or different, forms of practice.)

In addition to selecting between robust course offerings, students have the opportunity to participate on athletic teams and in enrichment programming, service projects, field trips and student leadership groups.

Eighth graders must complete a capstone project. With nearly 1,500 students, McAuliffe supports a lengthy list of enrichments and athletics, from cooking, art and writing clubs to a growing theater program and the McAuliffe Sundevils’ pre-high school sports program.

McAuliffe's size allows us to offer a wide range of elective and enrichment opportunities while our house model, in which grade level Assistant Principals move through the grade levels with students, means that students and families are served by a consistent, small group of educators. In addition, McAuliffe's academic model supports high quality, rigorous curriculum and instruction that prepares students for high school and beyond.

McAuliffe serves all of Denver.  Around one third of our students come from outside the Greater Park Hill Central Park enrollment zone. In addition, the current administrative team has 35 years of combined experience at McAuliffe. The institutional knowledge held by this team has allowed for our systems and structures to remain consistent and successful.

Northfield High School

As an accredited International Baccalaureate (IB) school and the largest high school in Central Park, Northfield (grades 9 to 12) offers a wide array of IB, Honors, Concurrent Enrollment and AP classes, as well as specialized electives, such as aviation, dance, pre-med courses and African American history.

Northfield follows what is called an "IB for All" approach. At many schools, IB programs essentially amount to a school within a school, segregated from the larger community. The IB program Northfield offers, called the IB Diploma Program, is for 11th and 12th grade students.

But from its start in 2015, Northfield has followed the belief that IB’s challenging curriculum benefits every student.

That means that at a minimum, all students complete IB classes in the four core areas (English, math, science and social studies). The Diploma Program requires six subject groups (arts and foreign language are the other two to complete the Diploma Program), passing the IB exams and completing three additional core requirements.

Taking the minimum of four IB classes exposes students to college-level work and the opportunity to earn college credit through qualifying scores on their IB exams.

Gifted and Talented and inclusive support are integrated into classrooms, in addition to targeted programs. Students enjoy the open-campus meal policy, as sophomores through seniors may leave campus during lunchtime.

Northfield athletic teams have been remarkably successful for a young school, having won or placed highly in state championship competitions in boys soccer, girls volleyball, football and basketball and cheer and dance.

In fact, the Nighthawks participate in more than 20 CHSAA-certified athletic options, including football, cross country, soccer and tennis, in addition to many affinity groups and clubs, such as the Black Student Alliance, La Raza, Amnesty International Club and Chess Club.

What is special about your school? At Northfield, diversity is embraced every day. Our student population speaks 36 languages; 51% are students of color; 32% have an individualized learning plan - this includes GT, IEP and/or 504, and 35% of our prior graduating seniors earned their seal of biliteracy - a designation awarded to high school seniors proficient in more than one language.

What do you want parents to know about sending their kids to your school? Although Northfield is a large school, student-centric relationships are an essential component of the school’s makeup. Students are supported by grade-level culture teams, including an assistant principal, counselor and dean. Additionally, Northfield has four mental health practitioners, five student support liaisons, two campus safety officers and a campus resource office from the Denver Police Department.

What do you want potential students to know about attending your school? Involvement is key to a student’s success at Northfield. Students are encouraged to explore the school’s assorted academic choices, to join a club, participate in activities and join an athletic team to broaden horizons, expand knowledge and deepen personal connections. Odyssey School of Denver

A public charter school based on the Expeditionary Learning model, Odyssey School of Denver (K to grade 8) is located in Park Hill but popular with Central Park families seeking an exploratory, student-discovery model of education. EL was developed on the principals of the highly acclaimed outdoor education program Outward Bound.

Odyssey School aspires to teach students how to learn through a focus on academic achievement, critical thinking and social responsibility. Students are urged to take risks and innovate, be civically and socially engaged, lead with integrity and compassion and push themselves to exceed expectations.

Odyssey fosters a commitment to a diverse local and global community through their Adventure Program and Learning Expeditions that engage students in real-world discussions with authentic projects, fieldwork and service.

Adventure activities, such as camping and rafting trips, are coordinated from kindergarten through eighth grade to become progressively more challenging, building upon the previous years’ experiences. In addition, activities are consistent by grade level: All students on one level participate in the same activities.

Rocky Mountain Prep Fletcher

Rocky Mountain Prep Fletcher (ECE to grade 5) is a charter school in northwest Aurora, adjacent to Central Park. It is part of Aurora Public Schools.

Swigert International School

As an accredited International Baccalaureate (IB) school, Swigert International School (ECE to grade 5) takes a whole child approach to develop internationally minded students who strive to create a kinder, more peaceful world.

What is special about your school? Swigert is a dynamic, inclusive and supportive school community.  We serve 655 students from ECE to 5th. As an International Baccalaureate School teachers have flexibility to create units that foster student curiosity, an international mindset and a focus on conceptual learning.

Our units tie to real world experiences and we match our fieldwork and student presentations of learning to create an interdisciplinary experience for our students. For example, during our third-grade immigration unit we hear from our families who have immigrated from around the globe, immerse our literacy block with stories from immigrants and students write pieces from the perspective of an immigrant.

Westerly Creek Elementary

Opened in 2004, Westerly Creek Elementary (ECE to grade 5) was the first  school in Central Park. Westerly Creek provides rigorous academics and a strong foundation in the arts to cultivate the growth and development of the whole child.

Westerly Creek is especially proud of its Gifted and Talented program. Students who have been identified as GT work with an ability group of their peers a minimum of twice a week in both math and literacy classrooms, as well as in a pull-out group once or twice a week per content area and through asynchronous participation in their general education classroom. (Asynchronous learning occurs when students undertake education on their own schedule and does not require consistent real-time interaction with an instructor.)

Westerly Creek Wolves emphasize five CREEK values: Compassion, Respect, Empathy, Engagement and Kindness. Student curiosity is nurtured in a child-centric, inclusive learning community.

Willow Elementary

An innovation school, Willow Elementary (ECE to grade 5) grounds learning in a technology-enhanced, personalized, project-based approach. At Willow, academics are rigorous and interactive, which means all students are immersed in the educational experience through exploration, discussion and reflection.

Willow educators cultivate a passion for knowledge alongside character qualities such as integrity, fairness and accountability. To develop a global perspective, Spanish classes are included in the core curriculum. Willow offers a welcoming environment where students feel safe and valued, and perseverance and creativity are classroom norms.

Willow has implemented various programs to enhance and further develop opportunities to challenge students.
